Voice Typing for Teachers in India — Lesson Plans and Reports
· teachers, education, India, lesson plans, productivity
Teaching produces an enormous amount of writing that nobody counts: lesson plans, question papers, worksheets, progress remarks, parent messages, circulars and inspection files. Most of it is repetitive, and most of it can be spoken faster than it can be typed.
Lesson plans
Speak the plan the way you would explain it to a substitute teacher: objective, materials, activity sequence, assessment, homework. Then format it as Notes and you have a structured plan with headings. A plan that takes twenty-five minutes to type usually takes four to five minutes to dictate and edit.
Question papers
Dictate the questions in order with marks — "question one, two marks, define photosynthesis" — then format as a List. Bilingual papers work well too: dictate the English section, switch language, dictate the Hindi or Marathi section, and paste both into the same document.
Progress remarks
Remarks for a class of forty are the worst part of the term. Dictate them in one continuous session, one student per sentence, then split them in your spreadsheet. Speaking keeps the tone natural and avoids the copy-paste sameness that parents notice immediately.
Parent messages
Messages to parents often need to be in Hindi, Marathi or Bengali even when the school works in English. Dictate in the parent's language, run cleanup, and paste into WhatsApp — see the Hindi and Marathi pages.
Circulars and reports
Administrative writing has a fixed shape. Dictate the content, apply the Email or Essay structure with a Formal tone, and edit rather than compose from scratch.
Setting it up in five minutes
- Open the tool in your phone browser and add it to your Home Screen
- Add subject vocabulary — student names, chapter titles, school name — to Saved Words so they are spelled consistently
- Dictate between periods rather than saving everything for the evening
- Keep a folder of dictated templates you can reuse each term
What it does not replace
Dictation gives you a first draft. Judgement about a child, the wording of a sensitive message to a parent, and the difficulty calibration of a question paper are still yours. Use the time saved on those.
