Voice Typing Not Working in Chrome? 9 Fixes That Work

· troubleshooting, Chrome, voice typing, microphone

Voice typing failing in Chrome is almost always a permission, device or network issue — not a broken tool. Work through these nine checks in order and you will usually be typing by voice again within a minute.

1. Microphone permission is blocked

Click the icon at the left of the address bar → Site settings → set Microphone to Allow → reload the page. On a blocked site Chrome silently returns no audio, so the page looks frozen.

2. The wrong input device is selected

If a headset is paired over Bluetooth but powered off, Chrome may still route audio to it. Open your system sound settings and set the built-in microphone as the default input, then reload.

3. Another tab or app is holding the mic

Google Meet, Zoom, WhatsApp Web and OBS lock the microphone. Close them completely, then reload.

4. The page is not on HTTPS

Browsers only allow microphone access on secure origins. If you are testing a local copy of a site over plain HTTP, the mic will never start.

5. Recording stops after 30–60 seconds

That is the classic limit of the browser's built-in speech API. Baani AI records in rolling chunks on the server instead, so a fifteen minute dictation session does not cut out. If you are hitting a hard cut-off in another tool, that is the cause.

6. Text appears in the wrong script

Check the language selector. Dictating Hindi with English (India) selected produces Roman text. Switch to Hindi and speak again — see the Hindi voice typing page.

7. Weak or intermittent network

Server-side transcription needs a stable connection. On patchy mobile data, chunks fail and the transcript arrives with gaps. Switch to Wi-Fi and retry the last recording.

8. Chrome is out of date

Open `chrome://settings/help` and update. Audio capture APIs changed significantly in recent releases and older builds fail silently.

9. An extension is interfering

Ad blockers, privacy shields and antivirus browser add-ons can intercept microphone streams. Test in an Incognito window with extensions disabled.

Still stuck?

Try a different browser — Chrome and Edge on Android and desktop, Safari on iPhone. If it works elsewhere, the problem is local to your Chrome profile. Our FAQ covers device-specific cases, or contact us with your phone model and browser version.
