Voice Typing vs Google Input Tools — Which Is Faster in 2026?

· comparison, Google Input Tools, transliteration, dictation

Google Input Tools and similar transliteration keyboards have been the default way to write Indian languages for over a decade: type *namaste* in Roman letters, get नमस्ते. Voice dictation removes the keyboard altogether. Which is actually better depends on what you are writing.

Speed

Transliteration typing on a phone lands around 20–30 words per minute for a practised user, and lower for long compound words. Comfortable speaking pace is 120–150 words per minute, and the raw transcript arrives at that speed. Even after editing, dictation is several times faster for anything longer than a line or two.

Effort

Transliteration requires constant attention: you are choosing candidates from a dropdown, correcting wrong picks, and thinking about Roman spellings of words you never write in Roman. Dictation requires you to think about what you want to say. For long documents, that difference in cognitive load matters more than raw speed.

Accuracy

Transliteration is deterministic — the same input gives the same output every time, and you can see the candidate list. Dictation depends on audio quality and can misread a word in a noisy room. For short, high-stakes strings such as a name on a form, transliteration is more predictable. For paragraphs, dictation plus a cleanup pass usually needs less correction overall.

Punctuation and structure

Transliteration gives you no help at all — you punctuate manually. Dictation with an AI cleanup step returns punctuated, paragraphed text and can restructure it as an email or a list. This is the biggest practical gap between the two.

Where each one wins

Use transliteration when:
- You are in a place where you cannot speak
- You are entering short, exact strings — names, addresses, form fields
- You have no network connection

Use dictation when:
- You are writing anything longer than two sentences
- You mix English and an Indian language naturally
- You want punctuated, structured output rather than raw text
- You are on a phone and typing is uncomfortable

Using both

Most people settle on a mix: dictate the body, then fix a name or a number by hand. That is a perfectly good workflow, and far faster than committing to either method alone.

Try dictation in your language: Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam.
