Why Indian Languages Need Better AI

· Indian languages, AI, inclusion

India is home to 22 officially recognized languages, each with millions of speakers. Yet, most AI technology is built primarily for English. This gap has real consequences.

The digital language divide:
- Only 10% of India's population is comfortable with English
- Most AI tools (ChatGPT, voice assistants, translation services) work best in English
- Indian language speakers are effectively excluded from the AI revolution

Why this matters:

  1. Education: Students who think in Hindi, Tamil, or Bengali but must use English-only AI tools lose the cognitive benefits of working in their native language.
  1. Employment: Job applications, skill assessments, and professional tools in English-only exclude capable professionals who are stronger in other languages.
  1. Government: AI-powered government services that only work in English fail to reach the citizens who need them most.
  1. Healthcare: Medical AI tools in English are useless for doctors who consult in regional languages.
  1. Business: Small businesses across India operate in regional languages. AI tools that don't support these languages can't help them.

What's needed:
- More training data in Indian languages
- Investment in speech recognition for underserved languages
- AI models that understand code-switching (mixing languages)
- Open-source language models for Indian languages

Baani AI is part of this solution, providing voice-to-text in 10 Indian languages. But much more needs to be done. The Indian tech industry, government, and global AI companies all have a role to play in ensuring AI works for all of India, not just the English-speaking minority.
